Remembrance Day 2018 Brisbane
The South Bank installation for the centenary of armistice.

The armistice came into effect at 11am on 11/11/1918, to end hostilities on land, sea and air after four years of carnage and loss during the Great War.

In Brisbane, big perspex letters spelling “REMEMBER” are filled with poppies, one for each of the 57, 705 Queenslanders who enlisted.

Giant poppies fell down the Kangaroo Point Cliffs in a dramatic display.

From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 Australians enlisted. Of these, 61,514 were killed, 59,357 in action. Another 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner.

On average, 38 members of the Australian armed forces died each day during the 1560 days of the war. That all adds up to an Australian casualty rate of 64.8 per cent, one of the highest in the war.
